Apple picking @ Core Cider House

If you haven't been fruit picking with your little one yet, it's still not too late in the season to go. You can pick your own from Wednesday 1st March till Sunday 5th March 2017 at the Core Cider House in Pickering Brook. We had the best day picking apples and pears on Sunday and discovered so much more than just apples! Situated in 40 acres of apple and pear orchards the Core Cider House is only 35 mins drive from perth and is well worth the drive.

It is such a beautiful setting and the grounds are so spacious, you truely feel you are in the country and not just half hour from the city. The pick your own orchards are at the bottom of the lawn area where you'll be met by the friendly and passionate core team who will explain about the fruit and share their knowledge of the orchards and the apple picking process. Entry to the orchards is $5 per adult and $3 per child, you can pick as many Galaxy apples and Peckham pears straight from the trees for only $3 per kg top tip: BYO bags!

There was such a buzz as families excitedly explored the orchards armed with bags, picking their fruit and discussing what they where going to do with all the apples they had collected. The fruit trees are packed with juicy red galaxy apples and are at all different levels making them the perfect high for little hands to reach. There is nothing quiet like fresh fruit picked from the tree! I've never seen our little one eat so many apples she couldn't get enough, she simply loved the fact that she could pick, collect and eat as many as she liked!

It was such a beautiful setting and we had such a good experience that we decided to explore and stay for a bit of lunch. There are two different dining experiences available. Down on the main lawn at Core on the Green there is a casual dining menu with a nice selection of small bites and pizzas. There are plenty of covered tables and chairs in this outside area for you to enjoy your food at, or if you have brought your pic-nic blanket you can enjoy some lunch out on the lawn. They also sell a wide range of their born, bred and bottled ciders and wines at the bar which all looked delicious. A popular way to try these is the tasting tray of 5 ciders which husband was very pleased with!

There is also the restaurant upstairs which really is a room with a view and has a full a la carte menu. Bookings are essential at weekends and when you go you'll see why. It is a supurb setting for a spot of lunch with a great atmosphere,  views looking out into the orchards with a seasonal menu including weekend special and kids meals. They also sell all the ciders and wines to take home that you can try with your meal, so even if you are driving you don't have to miss out!

We also found the apple shed markets were open at weekends from 10am - 4pm selling kilos of fresh fruit, mixed fruit hampers, Core jam and chutney, freshly squeezed orange and apple juice as well as ice cream. In the grounds there is also a small play park, an old tractor and huge logs for the kids to climb on, lots of families sat out on the lawn while the kids played relaxing with cold drinks, good food and fruit! A perfect way to relax after a hard morning of fruit picking!

The core cider house has live music every Sunday and can host weddings, parties and events in their beautiful grounds which includes a stunning dragon fly pond and gardens check out their website for more details.

Take five Ice Cream Parlour

Take 5 Ice Cream Parlour - Baldivis Square Hot day? Take 5 and go get some ice cream from Take 5 Ice Cream Parlour in Baldivis Square, it’s truely delicious! We went along to check it out and now understand why the locals queue up outside this ice cream shop, it’s just the best ice cream.   We couldn’t choose which flavours to try they all looked so good. We eventually decided on the Ferrero, their current sell out ice cream. Salted caramel with swirls of real caramel, Bounty for the coconut lover, Banana and Nutella (my absolute favourite) and a scoop of Strawberry Sorbet for our little Miss and we were not disappointed! Fresh creamy ice cream and tangy sorbet all packed full of real flavour.    They are always trying out new and exciting flavours and combinations like white chocolate and tim tams, a pineapple sorbet and caramel slice; see their facebook page for updates and promotions.    I honestly can’t wait to go back and try some of the other flavours on offer, the waffles and fr
